Matthew 13:44-46 “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field. 45 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. 46 When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it! (NLT)
In the parable of the hidden treasure, the man sold everything he owned to buy the field. In the parable of the pearl of great value, the merchant sold everything he owed to purchase the pearl. Both of them found something of great worth and were willing to sell everything to obtain it. The treasure was WORTH EVERYTHING to them.
In Matthew 13, Jesus tells several parables to teach us important truth about the kingdom of God. These parables are known to bible scholars as the Kingdom Parables. The Parable of the Hidden Treasure and The Parable of the Pearl teach two very important truths. First, it teaches us what God was willing to do to purchase our redemption. We are WORTH EVERYTHING to God. That’s why he sent his one and only son to die for our sins. Jesus laid down his life for us. Second, it teaches us that the kingdom of God is worth anything it may cost us to follow Jesus.
God, thank you for seeing me as valuable. For loving me so much that you would send your son to die for me. Your love for me is amazing. How could I not serve you with all of my heart, mind, soul, and strength all the days of my life. Amen!
